Senior Product Manager

New York City or Boston, MA

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Wimba’s Product Management department is expanding and seeking an experienced Product Manager. This role will define requirements and manage the design/development of an innovative suite of synchronous and asynchronous collaborative software products for the educational market. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the market’s needs and the ability to work cross-departmentally in order to transform those needs into tangible software solutions. This position reports to the Director of Product Management.


  • Own and develop Market Requirements Documents for your product area
  • Perform business analysis with subject matter experts, customers and via competitive reviews
  • Communicate with internal departments to ensure all operational requirements are understood and met
  • Lead working groups that translate market requirements into detailed product requirements
  • Work with design resources to ensure user interface specifications meet customer needs
  • Manage and maintain a strong client focus, via customer interviews and surveys, leading product advisory board sessions, and prioritization of client enhancement requests
  • Be the focal point for other departments throughout the product lifecycle to ensure that all company functions have input to, and understanding of, the product scope, status and justifications for variances
  • Assist throughout the development cycle, ensuring development receives timely answers to functional questions; documentation gets appropriate level of technical review; QA test plans meet the project requirements
  • Evangelize new products within the company and train staff on new releases
  • Assist in the design and ongoing improvement of internal product management processes

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will possess demonstrable experience in the following areas:


  • 5+ years as a Product Manager (or comparable role) in a software development environment
  • Strong experience documenting and communicating both high-level product plans and detailed software requirements, and working collaboratively with small teams to implement these features
  • Experience working with geographically distributed teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication ability
  • Ability to influence without authority
  • Conversant in engineering topics, preferably having some development experience
  • Prior project management experience creating project plans, detailed schedules and performing risk analysis and mitigation
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters degree desired

Highly Desired Skills/Experience

We are especially interested in candidates with specific domain knowledge in one or more of the following areas:


  • Real-time collaboration/communication systems (instant messaging, audio, video, whiteboard, desktop sharing, etc.)
  • Software product experience in general in the field of educational technology (software systems used by K12 or higher-ed institutions)
  • Software accessibility best practices
  • Documenting and translating API/SDK requirements
  • Formal product/project management training in software development methodologies
