In April, 2008 UNT became the first major Texas public university to sign the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment with an ultimate goal of becoming climate neutral. Secondly and more immediately pressing on a personal level, gas prices began to soar! Following these events, the campus became more focused on finding green alternatives to driving. This presentation describes how Wimba Classroom is playing a role in helping the UNT community take immediate steps to reduce strain on fuel budgets and support a larger university goal in becoming carbon neutral. Included are challenges anyone may face in implementing a new technology such as Wimba Classroom on their campus as well as ways to identify opportunities, and strategies for roll-out.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, several nursing classes at the LSU Health Sciences Center relied on Wimba and other online course technologies to help teach its students despite some being displaced and despite some campus buildings being completely non-operational. Join Mr. Glenn Ruiz as he gives a first-hand account of the creative ways which allowed several courses to thrive. You will also learn several other examples of schools that have used similar technologies to plan for pandemics and survive fires and floods. Hopefully this presentation will spark ideas for your own disaster preparedness plans.

This session demonstrates examples of simulations that use a mixture of web technologies, social networking and virtual worlds. In particular, it discusses in detail a simulation that enables groups of law students to work as partners in simulated law practices in a virtual town that supports a range of casework. It also showcases an accident investigation simulation built in the virtual world Second Life where groups of students can experience an accident scenario, investigate it, design safe systems of work to deal with the case and work collaboratively on accident analysis and prevention.

Jane Himmel from the University of North Texas and Glenn Ruiz from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) School of Nursing discuss how their respective institutions achieve Distance Learning 2.0 goals and help teach Nursing to working students throughout the state. According to Himmel, meeting online for classes or meetings can be extremely effective in terms of maximizing attedance and quality of information. In fact, UNT even has a green initiative that relies heavily on Wimba to help the environment. Ruiz will discuss the numerous ways LSUHSC's Nursing department has been able to cleverly utilize Wimba Classroom to teach both potential and working nurses throughout Louisana, even after Hurricane Katrina.View Archive

Instructors at CSU, Chico have taught classes that met to face-to-face but simultaneously had students logged in remotely via Wimba Classroom. For years, instructors at CSU, Chico have taught classes that met to face-to-face but simultaneously had students logged in remotely via Wimba Classroom. These remote students were able to see the face-to-face teacher via video and a student assistant even took remote students' questions. This created a full classroom experience for both the in-person and the remote students - while also providing a unique way to capture lectures via Wimba Classroom.
